Un astéroïde géant menaçant toute vie sur Terre, c’est un scénario digne d’un film catastrophe mais il ne faudrait pas oublier que cela s’est déjà produit il y a des millions d’années. Si les dinosaures étaient toujours de ce monde, ils s’en souviendraient encore… C’est pourquoi il est essentiel pour la NASA d’en savoir le maximum sur ces corps céleste en balade dans l’espace.
C’est dans le cadre de la mission Artemis I, qui doit permettre à l’humanité de reposer le pied sur la Lune, qu’une sonde va être lancée pour étudier un de ces cailloux volants. En l’occurrence, il s’agit de 2020 GE, une classe d’astéroïdes méconnue. La mission de NEA Scout (NEA pour « Near Earth Asteroid ») sera de collecter le maximum d’images de l’objet qui mesure 18 mètres de diamètre.
Une boîte à chaussures spatiale
Avec son design cubique, la sonde ressemble à une grosse boîte à chaussures (ce qu’on appelle un CubeSat). Prenant place dans le module Orion d’Artemis I, le NEA Scout sera lancé le 12 mars. Une fois détaché du lanceur, la sonde se rapprochera de 2020 GE grâce à une immense voile solaire de 86 mètres carrés. Une taille énorme par rapport à l’appareil ! Mais c’est indispensable pour obtenir l’impulsion indispensable au moteur.
L’objectif est de se rapprocher suffisamment de l’astéroïde lorsqu’il sera au plus proche de la Terre (pas de panique, on parle de 5,7 millions de kilomètres). La NASA veut savoir si l’objet est composé d’un bloc solide ou au contraire de roches et de poussières. Ces informations conditionneront la mise au point d’une riposte, le jour où nous aurons besoin d’éloigner un astéroïde s’approchant d’un peu trop près de notre planète.
L’agence spatiale américaine a lancé en 2015 un partenariat pour les futures technologies d’exploration spatiale (NextSTEP) pour développer des moyens innovants de jeter un œil sur ce qui se passe dans l’espace. C’est au sein de ce projet que le NEA Scout a été mis au point.
