Le gouvernement nigérian a remis samedi deux oeuvres d’art en bronze à un palais royal traditionnel du sud du Nigeria dans le cadre d’une série de restaurations d’objets pillés à l’époque coloniale.
Lors d’une cérémonie accompagnée de chants, de persussions et de danses, un coq en bronze et une tête de monarque ont été remis au roi Uku Akpolokpolor Ewuare II, un des souverains traditionnels du pays le plus peuplé d’Afrique.
Des milliers de bronzes du Bénin – sculptures et objets d’art datant du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle – ont été pillés dans le palais de l’ancien royaume du Bénin et sont conservés dans des musées aux États-Unis et en Europe.

Les responsables nigérians ont négocié la restitution des deux objets conservés à Aberdeen et Cambridge et prévoient de construire un musée à Benin City, dans le sud de l’État d’Edo, où ils espèrent conserver d’autres bronzes.
« Ce retour nous donne beaucoup de joie parce qu’il symbolise pour nous l’espoir que tous les objets volés seront rendus », a déclaré Charles Edosomwan, le chef du royaume de Bénin.
« Nous avons consulté et négocié avec diverses institutions, divers musées et divers gouvernements à travers le monde », a expliqué Abba Tijani, directeur de la Commission nationale des musées et monuments.
La restitution des deux objets intervient alors que les appels se multiplient en Afrique pour que les pays occidentaux restituent le butin colonial de leurs musées et collections privées.
La France, le Royaume-Uni, la Belgique, les Pays-Bas et l’Allemagne ont reçu des demandes de restitution de trésors perdus de la part de pays africains. L’année dernière, la France a restitué 26 trésors royaux au Bénin, voisin du Nigeria, et le président béninois Patrice Talon a officiellement ouvert samedi une exposition de ces objets au public à Cotonou.
L’Allemagne a accepté de commencer à restituer au Nigeria des centaines d’œuvres d’art anciennes pillées. Le musée ethnologique de Berlin possède 530 objets historiques provenant de l’ancien royaume, dont 440 bronzes – considérés comme la plus importante collection en dehors du British Museum de Londres.
