A l’instar du Nigeria et du Sénégal en Afrique de l’Ouest, le Cameroun a entrepris d’optimiser les offres de transport public dans ses grandes villes, afin de faciliter la mobilité urbaine. Douala est notamment la cible de deux projets majeurs, un tramway et des bus à haut niveau de service.
Dans une interview accordée au journal Défis Actuels et relayée par Investir au Cameroun, le maire de Douala Roger Mbassa Ndiné, a annoncé pour 2023 des travaux de construction d’un tramway de 18 km. « C’est le projet de tramway qui vient de Douala 4ème jusqu’au carrefour Agip » a-t-il indiqué.
Ce projet pilote présenté par le ministère du Développement urbain et de l’Habitat, sera mis en œuvre par le consortium belgo-turc Iristone-Ilci. Ces partenaires du gouvernement camerounais avaient déjà annoncé le démarrage des travaux en 2019, pour une livraison prévue en 2021. En cas de lancement effectif des travaux en 2023, la livraison devrait être effectuée en 2024.
Afin de rendre disponible l’énergie électrique nécessaire au fonctionnement du tramway, le projet intègre la construction d’une centrale électrique autonome dans la zone industrielle de Bonabéri, une banlieue de Douala. Cette infrastructure fournira une puissance supérieure aux besoins d’exploitation du tramway, précise Iristone/ILCI.
Après le projet de Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), dont les travaux doivent démarrer cette année avec le concours financier de la Banque mondiale, le tramway est le 2ème projet d’envergure que se prépare à lancer le Cameroun dans la capitale économique, dans le but d’améliorer la mobilité urbaine.
Ces deux projets sont d’un grand intérêt pour la ville de Douala, ou « le réseau de bus actuel est (…) inefficace et représente moins de 1 % des déplacements » affirme le maire. Une réalité qui, selon la Banque mondiale, contraint les populations à se rabattre sur « la marche, les taxis ou les modes de transport informels tels que les mototaxis, qui restent considérés comme peu sûrs et onéreux ».
