Un prédicateur évangélique nigérian populaire mais controversé, TB Joshua, est décédé, a annoncé dimanche son église sur Facebook sans en révéler la cause.
Agé de 57 ans, le fondateur de la Synagogue Church of All Nations, une méga-église chrétienne de Lagos, était l’un des prédicateurs les plus influents d’Afrique avec des millions d’abonnés à la télévision et aux médias sociaux, mais YouTube et Facebook l’ont pris à partie pour des contenus jugés violents.
« Dieu a ramené chez lui son serviteur le prophète TB Joshua… Ses derniers moments sur terre ont été passés au service de Dieu », a écrit l’église sur sa page Facebook, sans donner plus de détails. L’un des avocats du pasteur, Olalekan Ojo, a également confirmé sa mort.
« Je confirme que l’homme de Dieu, le pasteur TB Joshua, est décédé samedi après son programme du soir », a déclaré Ojo à l’AFP.
Temitope Balogun Joshua, souvent appelé « l’homme de Dieu » ou « le prophète » connu pour ses « miracles » et ses « résurrections », avait une fortune estimée à plusieurs millions de dollars, selon Forbes. L’homme au visage rond avec une barbiche et des chemises élégantes était vénéré par de nombreux politiciens africains, stars du sport et célébrités du divertissement.
Il s’est également qualifié de philanthrope et était largement connu comme un « télévangéliste », avec des prédications diffusées en direct sur les réseaux sociaux et sur sa chaîne de télévision populaire Emmanuel TV. Un communiqué de la présidence a déclaré que le chef de l’État nigérian, Muhammadu Buhari « s’engage avec la famille et les membres de la Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) sur le décès de leur père et fondateur ».
« Le célèbre télévangéliste manquera à ses disciples du monde entier non seulement pour ses contributions spirituelles, mais aussi pour avoir touché de nombreuses vies par des gestes philanthropiques », a déclaré l’assistante présidentielle Femi Adesina.
