L’ancien président ivoirien Laurent Gbagbo est arrivé jeudi à Abidjan en avion depuis Bruxelles. C’est la première fois qu’il foule le sol de Côte d’Ivoire depuis qu’il a été chassé du pouvoir en 2011. Un retour permis par son acquittement de crimes contre l’humanité par la justice internationale et par le feu vert donné par Abidjan au nom de la « réconciliation nationale ».
L’avion transportant l’ancien président ivoirien Laurent Gbagbo a atterri, jeudi 17 juin, peu avant 16 h 30 (locales et GMT), dans son pays qu’il avait été contraint de quitter il y a dix ans, trois mois à peine après on acquittement définitif de crimes contre l’humanité par la justice internationale.
Il est rentré par un vol régulier venant de Bruxelles où il vivait depuis son acquittement par la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) en janvier 2019, confirmé en appel le 31 mars. Laurent Gbagbo a été acclamé à sa descente d’avion par des centaines de personnes, celles qui avaient pu avoir accès à l’aéroport, ses proches, les responsables de son parti, le Front populaire ivoirien (FPI), et le personnel de l’aéroport et de compagnies aériennes.
Tout au long de la journée, la police a dispersé avec du gaz lacrymogène tous ceux qui tentaient de se rassembler près de l’aéroport, situé dans le Sud de la capitale, dans le quartier de Port-Bouët où des échauffourées ont aussi opposé les forces de l’ordre à des partisans de Laurent Gbagbo.
L’ex-président s’est rendu ensuite en cortège dans le quartier d’Attoban, où se trouve son ancien QG de campagne, où des centaines de personnes l’ont accueilli. Devant les membres de la direction de son parti, le Front populaire ivoirien (FPI), il s’est dit « heureux de retrouver la Côte d’Ivoire et l’Afrique après avoir été acquitté » de crimes contre l’humanité par la justice internationale. « Je suis ivoirien mais j’ai appris en prison que j’étais d’Afrique. Toute l’Afrique me soutient », a-t-il insisté devant des partisans.
« J’ai des larmes aux yeux en pensant à ma mère décédée », a-t-il déclaré, évoquant ce décès survenu pendant qu’il était emprisonné à La Haye. Il a ajouté qu’il aurait l’occasion de faire « plus tard » un discours politique.
