La saison 2021 du Championnat du monde d’endurance auto (WEC) — dont la pièce maîtresse, les 24 Heures du Mans, a lieu ce week-end — voit l’introduction d’une nouvelle catégorie reine remplaçant le LMP1: l’Hypercar.
Cette catégorie comprendra à terme deux types de véhicules aux spécifications (poids minimum: 1030 kg, puissance: 500 kW, soit environ 680 ch) et aux performances similaires:
. Les « Le Mans Hypercar » (LMH), qui courent dès cette année, sont conçues entièrement par le constructeur qui les engage. Elles peuvent ou non disposer d’une motorisation hybride. En dessinant sa carrosserie, le constructeur peut concevoir un prototype ou s’inspirer d’un modèle d’hypercar routière.
C’est l’option choisie par Toyota et l’américain Glickenhaus cette année, Peugeot et l’écurie autrichienne ByKolles l’an prochain, puis Ferrari en 2023.
. Les « Le Mans Daytona h » (LMDh), qui courront à partir de 2023, auront en commun un châssis fourni par Multimatic, Oreca, Dallara ou Ligier et un système hybride standard, alors que le constructeur engagé concevra son moteur et sa carrosserie.
Porsche, Audi, BMW et HPD, filiale de la branche américaine de Honda, s’aligneront en LMDh.
Ces deux types de voitures pourront concourir ensemble en WEC comme en WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, le championnat d’endurance américain, et donc aux 24 Heures du Mans comme aux 24 Heures de Daytona.
En 2021, les anciennes LMP1 non hybrides sont encore admises dans la catégorie reine, avec des performances équilibrées. C’est le cas de l’Alpine engagé au Mans.
