Une taille comparable à la Floride ou à la Grande-Bretagne. Victime du réchauffement climatique, le glacier Thwaites (Antarctique) s’est détérioré ces dernières années, au point de risquer de se briser dans la prochaine décennie, entraînant une forte hausse du niveau des mers à travers le globe.
En raison du réchauffement des mers sur Terre causé par les diverses pollutions humaines, le colosse de glace a vu sa vitesse d’écoulement doubler lors des 30 dernières années. Aujourd’hui, le Thwaites déverse en moyenne 50 milliards de tonnes de glace dans l’océan chaque année.
«Je le visualise un peu comme cette vitre de voiture où vous avez quelques fissures qui se propagent lentement, puis soudain vous passez sur une bosse dans votre voiture et tout commence à se briser dans toutes les directions», a expliqué le Dr Erin Pettit de Université d’Etat de l’Oregon pour BBC News.
Pour avoir un ordre d’idée, si le bassin de drainage du glacier venait à fondre complètement, le rejet total de la glace entraînerait une hausse subite de 65cm de la hauteur des océans sur notre planète.
«Il va y avoir des changements spectaculaires sur le front du glacier, probablement dans moins d’une décennie. Des études publiées et non publiées vont dans ce sens», a analysé le glaciologue Ted Scambos, coordinateur américain en chef de l’International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), pour le journal britannique.
UN SOUS-MARIN POUR LES RECHERCHES EN 2022
Pour éviter une catastrophe de cette nature, le projet ITGC, financé par la National Science Foundation américaine et le Natural Environment Research Council du Royaume-Uni, va examiner pendant 5 ans le glacier.
Pour cela, l’équipe pourra compter sur un sous-marin jaune baptisé «Boaty McBoatface», qui aura pour mission de plonger sous la glace de Thwaites afin de recueillir un maximum d’informations sur l’ensemble des facteurs influençant la fonte, à savoir la température de l’eau, la direction du courant et la turbulence.
L’engin effectuera dès 2022 des missions comprises entre un et quatre jours et suivra son propre chemin à travers les cavités. «C’est effrayant. Nous pourrions ne pas récupérer Boaty.
